From the Preface

In 1996, the Maryland Geological Survey celebrates its 100th anniversary of continuous operation as a geological investigative branch of State government.

Nearly three years ago, the idea was hatched to produce a Commemorative Volume as part of the recognition of the Survey's centennial celebration. As the editors, we set out to develop a special volume that would consist of a number of papers on a variety of topics related to Maryland's geology and the role geology has played throughout Maryland's history.

This volume should be seen more as an anthology of Maryland Geology than as a treatise on Maryland geology. It does not cover all possible geological topics. Several papers deal with various aspects of history, such as the history of the Survey itself and the history of the exploitation of some of Maryland's mineral resources. Other papers reflect topical studies in water resources, structural geology, and stratigraphy. Some contributions are technical in nature; others are not. Some papers report on original geologic investigations, whereas others are a synthesis of facts and ideas. Writing styles range from the formal to the informal, and the editors have tried to retain the individual styles of the authors as much as possible. It is our intent through such a "mix" to impart a broad sampling of the history and the science of geology in Maryland. It is our hope that every reader will find something of interest in this book.
