The Society is a non-profit organization for rose growers and enthusiasts. Affiliated with the American Rose Society and the Royal National Rose Society, the MRS offers a wealth of practical ideas and information to its members. Bi-monthly newsletters and members' meetings help gardeners to learn successful rose gardening...how to plant and prune; when to fertilize, water and mulch; when and how to spray; how to protect plants in winter.
SallyBeth likes Mr. Lincoln      The MRS web site provides news, event announcements, gardening tips, and useful information to Maryland rose gardeners. We provide a variety of online resources to rose lovers everywhere. The Almanac is a potpourri of opinions, observations, soundings-off, and general wisdom from our members. Specific, seasonally oriented growing information is presented in the Calendar section. We cover many topics, include propagation, planting, feeding, pruning, and (ugh) spraying. Would you like to see roses in action? Check out the Gardens section to find MRS sponsored gardens, and many other fine displays. The Resources section will direct you to places you may find items mentioned among our pages, as well as notable dealers in plant stock and supplies.
Maryland offers a challenging environment for rose cultivation. Our summers are long, very hot, too humid, and often dry. Winters usually have many freeze-thaw cycles, and long term snow cover is the exception. Black spot, mildew, scorching and frost heaving are common hazards encountered in the garden. However, the generally temperate climate experienced by most of the state is favorable for rose growing.
