Data Collection

SEDIMENT SAMPLING:

Drill cuttings on paper plates

A pint-sized sample of the drill cuttings is collected every 20 feet in order to characterize the sediment that is being drilled. Each sediment sample is described by grain size, mineralogy, color, and any other defining characteristics.

A small amount of each sediment sample is placed on a paper plate labelled with the sampling depth. The plates are laid out side-by-side on the ground so that lithologic contacts (identified by a change in the sediment characteristics) are easily visable.

For each 20-foot drilling interval, wet and dried sediment samples are retained for further analysis and archival purposes.
