Mission:

• Exploring for ground water by means of hydrogeologic studies, geophysical surveys, and test drilling.
• Assessing streams, springs, and aquifers and their interactions.
• Forecasting potential effects of water demand and land use on stream flows, groundwater levels, water quality, salt-water intrusion, and land subsidence.
• Maintaining a statewide water-data network in cooperation with the US Geological Survey, Water Resources Division.

Current Projects and Publications

Ongoing Projects:

• Water-Supply Potential of the Magothy, Upper Patapsco, Lower Patapsco, and Patuxent Aquifers in Anne Arundel County, Maryland: a 2 1/2-year study to determine the effect of projected (2040) withdrawals from the Magothy, Upper Patapsco, Lower Patapsco, and Patuxent aquifers on ground-water levels and recharge rates.
• Southern Maryland Project: A study to determine the hydrogeologic characteristics and water supply potential of the Patapsco aquifers in southern Maryland.
• Piedmont Region Water Quality: Reevaluation of groundwater quality in the Piedmont region of Baltimore County, Maryland.
• Arsenic Study: A study to monitor arsenic concentrations in ground water from the Maryland Coastal Plain aquifers.
• The Maryland Statewide Groundwater Quality Network: This study documents ambient groundwater quality in shallow aquifers throughout the state and provides a basis for monitoring future changes in water quality.
• Development of Geographic-Information Systems Database for Geologic and Water-Quality Data Related to Radium in Anne Arundel County Ground Water
• Kent Island Project: A long-term project to monitor brackish-water intrusion.

• Southern Anne Arundel County Project: A study to determine the hydrogeology, water-supply potential, and water quality of the Aquia and Magothy aquifers in Southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The final report for this project can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat format (1,449 kb).
• Hydrogeology of the coastal plain aquifer system in Queen Anne's and Talbot Counties, Maryland, with a discussion of the brackish-water intrusion in the Aquia aquifer
